Why is Organising Logistics Crucial to Business Development

No matter what size business you have, there are certain areas that need to be mastered in order to continue to grow your business. One of the major areas that can be overlooked in this growth is logistics. But what is logistics and why is it important?

What is logistics?

Originally, the use of the term logistics came from the military and referred to the process of supply troops with equipment and supplies while in the war theatre.  Business logistics started to develop in the 1950s when companies began sending their goods around the world and order fulfilment services began to develop.

Today logistics is the organisation of goods from the point of manufacture or creation to the customer and includes areas such as transportation, shipping, storage and management.  It also includes the ability for both the business and the customer to track the item and to offer a returns service of the same standard if needed.

What does logistics do?

While this is the basic definition of a logistics service, for a company to expand then the upper end of these services is the best option.  Using a company that transports the goods efficiently but stores them in an unsecured site that is prone to theft will not help a business expand.  Or by using a company whose shipping network are unreliable and therefore miss delivery dates won’t impress customers and achieve customer satisfaction and loyalty.

One of the key things to look at when considering a company for your logistics services is do they offer omni-channel fulfilment?  Can they design a custom-made process that is perfect for your business, in partnership with you and your team to ensure that you are fully knowledgeable about the processes used and confident in them?

One of the best things to look at when selecting a logistics company is their experience.  Anyone can talk a great theoretical package but what experience do they have when things go wrong?  One such company who have recently started offering pan-European logistics services is Viapost.  While the name may not be familiar, the experience that they have will be, as the company combines the vast experience of Morin Logistic and Orium, two of the biggest e-commerce fulfilment companies in France.

Alongside their experience, Viapost offer an established network of locations to service business across Europe including in large cities from France and the UK to Germany, Switzerland and Italy.  The company has over 1000 employees who know what to do and how to handle a problem should one occur, meaning that their experience and knowledge can be working for your business and its growth.
