British finance author Glen Arnold bags the top prize as The Financial Times Guide to Investing is crowned ‘Best investing book of all time’ for 2021 by Financial-Expert.co.uk.

The ranking was determined by a weighing of publicly available reviews, the personal preferences of the editor, and the volume of copies sold in the UK in the final 3 months of 2020.

Speaking to Financial-Expert.co.uk after hearing that his title had been selected as the winner, Glen explained what originally inspired him to pick up the pen and write an investing book for beginners;

“I figured people need an impartial guide, one that empowers the reader to act, to take actual investment decisions confidently.”

When asked if he could share any advice for budding financial writers out there looking to first for first-time investors, he offered the following:

“Think from the point of view of the beginner within the field. Do not assume a good knowledge of maths or accounting, for example. Do not try to appear too clever - e.g. fancy maths, or fancy words”.

Beyond the accolade, a top ranking on the Financial-Expert.co.uk ranking will also help to cement the position of The Financial Times Guide to Investing as one of the best-selling investing books by any UK author on Amazon, the popular online book retailer.

Financial Expert’s own metrics show that their top 10 investing book guides drive over £60,000 of book sales each year. This means that being named in the top few positions could lead to a change in fortunes for a book reaching the end of a publishing run.

Other runners up to the best investing book title include How to Own the World by Andrew Craig (#3) - a simple book which remains popular in 2021 with first-time investing book buyers. Financial Expert had this to say about the 2019 title:

“Andrew writes with a degree of impartiality that is often absent from many other investing titles which can occasionally feel self-promotional.”

Ex-hedge fund manager Lars Krojier also features in the ranking at #8 with his title ‘Investing Demystified’. Explaining why the book works so well as a first-time read; the ranking creators shared that:

“Investing Demystified also devotes a good portion of the text to debunking myths about investing which won't go away. “

For completeness, we’ve reproduced the full ranking of the top 10 books honoured by Financial-Expert.co.uk for 2021:

#1 - The Financial Times Guide to Investing by Glen Arnold
#2 - Investing for Dummies (UK) by Tony Levene
#3 - How to Own The World by Andrew Craig
#4 - The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John Bogle
#5 - The Smart Money Method by Stephen Clapham
#6 - Unknown Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager
#7 - Investing Demystified by Lars Kroijer
#8 - Shares Made Simple by Rodney Hobson
#9 - The Naked Trader by Robbie Burns
#10 - The Money Diet by Martin Lewis

Despite the exclusive nature of a top ten ranking, Financial Expert founder Simon Oates remains open-minded about his favourite investing titles:

“An investing book is like a single class or module. Interesting in isolation, but significantly more meaningful when paired with other learning experiences. I recommend reading no fewer than 3 investing books from different authors before you begin your investment journey to ensure you’ve had a well-rounded education.”
