A new market report published by Transparency Market Research is Saudi Arabia Defibrillators Market
Published 14 September 2015
The Saudi Arabia defibrillators market was valued at USD 28.6 million in 2013 and is estimated to reach USD 49.8 million by 2020 growing with a CAGR of 8.3% from 2014 to 2020.

For decades, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been considered as the standard and most effective first aid technique for sudden cardiac arrest and has been taught in both classrooms and community centers worldwide. Despite such popularity and awareness, CPR alone cannot save a majority of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) victims. Most individuals who experience SCA have ventricular fibrillation (VF) which causes the heart muscles to beat rapidly and improperly in which CPR alone cannot provide effective results. It is where the role and importance of defibrillators comes in which renders electrical shocks and provides natural pacemaking cells a chance to re-establish the normal cardiac rhythm. A report by the World Heart Federation published in Nature Middle East stated that children in the Arab Gulf region are more prone to developing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) than other Arab states. One in four adults in Saudi Arabia is likely to suffer from heart attack in the next 10 years, as per a study presented at the 26th Annual Conference of the Saudi Heart Association (SHA).

The report studies the defibrillators market in Saudi Arabia from two perspectives: by products and by end users. The product segment encompasses Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) Defibrillators. Over the past few years, the adoption of AEDs at public places such as airports, malls, and business places has significantly contributed to the growth and adoption of product in Saudi Arabia. Several campaigns and training programs are organized by government agencies and hospitals to promote awareness about ALS and AEDs during SCA events. An article published in February 2014 stated that King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah and Life Support Training Center - Postgraduate Education and Academic Affairs held a two-day course on advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) from January 29. ALS devices are primarily used in hospital settings owing to their efficiency to monitor multiple parameters such as pulse rate, heart rhythm and oxygen concentration. Additionally, the device requires specialized skills pertaining to which assistance and monitoring of medical practitioners is of utmost importance. The end users segment include hospitals, public access defibrillators, emergency medical services & business workplaces. Among the end users thus mentioned the hospitals segment is dominated by the usage and adoption of ALS devices. Whereas, Owing to affordable cost and user friendly interface in AEDs has led its increased adoption and installation at public places and business workplaces. Emergency medical services which include paramedical forces, firefighters and police vans have mixed acceptance with respect to AEDs and ALS.

Overall, the trends and dynamics of the defibrillators market in Saudi Arabia are not comparable with developed economies such as the U.S. and Europe. In general, defibrillators market in Saudi Arabia is driven by increasing government and private players initiatives to create awareness and imbibe importance of defibrillation during SCA event. For instance, Gulf Air in 2011 as a measure to provide emergency assistance to its onboard customers during cardiac arrest installed Philips AED in all its aircrafts. Similarly, the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health installed 88 ZOLL AED Plus units in Mecca for resuscitation of pilgrims experiencing SCA at the Hajj. Such initiatives is expected to drive the market in the next few years. Lack of local manufacturing facilities and low awareness among public are currently the major restraints to market.

Key players profiled in the report include Biotronik SE & Co. KG, Cardiac Science Corporation, Defibtech, LLC, GE Healthcare, HeartSine Technologies, Inc., Mindray Medical International Ltd., Nihon Kohden Corporation, Philips Healthcare, Physio-Control, Inc., Schiller AG, and ZOLL Medical Corporation.
