Europe Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Market Expected to Reach USD 87.2 Million in 2022

A new market report published by Transparency Market Research is Platelet Rich Plasma Market
Published 23 September 2015
The Europe platelet rich plasma market was valued at USD 42.1 million in 2013 and is estimated to reach a market value of USD 87.2 million in 2022 growing at a CAGR of 8.3% from 2014 to 2022.

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a blood derived product mostly obtained from the patient’s own blood. It is used for the treatment of various diseases (Achilles tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, leg ulcers) in shorter time. Rapidly increasing global obese population and rising bariatric surgeries is one of the major drivers of the PRP market in Europe. According to statistics published in The Lancet, around 67% men and 57% women were either overweight or obese in the U.K. in 2013. Moreover, in Western Europe, Iceland had the highest obesity rate; around 74% men and 61% women were overweight or obese (2013). The obese population in developed countries (the U.K., Germany) and belonging to high income group is likely to undergo bariatric surgeries, which would increase the uptake of PRP. Moreover, increasing cosmetic surgeries and technological advancements in PRP therapies would boost market growth in Europe. However, disease transmission and chances of treatment failure are the major factors likely to restrain the growth of the PRP market.

Based on the type, pure PRP was the largest segment in 2013, accounting for a 70.8% share of the PRP market in Europe. High preference for pure PRP and rich content of platelets are the key factors that contributed to the dominance of this segment in 2013. The L-PRF segment is likely to witness the highest growth rate during the forecast period from 2014 to 2022 due to advantages such as reduced wound healing time, ease of preparation, high content of leukocytes, growth factors and stem cells and cost effectiveness over other PRP derivatives.

The orthopedic application segment accounted for the largest share owing to factors such as wide use of PRP in the treatment of orthopedic diseases such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis cracks, bone fractures and ligament injuries that drives the demand for PRP in this application segment. On the other hand, the cosmetic surgeries segment is expected to witness a fastest growth rate during the forecast period from 2014 to 2022. This growth would be majorly due to wide utilization of PRP in improving facial aesthetics and its use as a substitute for dermal fillers.

Geographically, in 2013, U.K. dominated the Europe PRP market owing to rising prevalence of orthopedic and reconstructive procedures coupled with increasing number of bariatric surgeries. In addition, increasing preference for PRP therapy for sports injuries would increase the healthy population of the country. For instance, the London Sports Injury Clinic performs PRP therapy for almost every patient coming to them with sports injury.

The Europe PRP market is highly fragmented with the presence of a large number of small and large multinational players. In 2013, Arthrex, Inc. dominated the Europe PRP market due to its strong emphasis on marketing and distribution strategies in the European countries such as the U.K., Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, France and Denmark. Other important players present in the Europe PRP market include Biomet, Inc., EmCyte Corporation, AdiStem Ltd., Glofinn Oy, Medira Ltd., and Regen Lab SA.
