Cured-In-Place Pipe Market: Highlights
There are various trenchless techniques available for the rehabilitation of damaged pipelines, such as CIPP and slip lining, among which CIPP is gaining popularity, owing to its numerous benefits over the competing ones. It is suitable for the rehabilitation of pipelines with a wide range of diameter as well as applications including sewer, potable water, and stormwater. It gives a new life to the damaged pipelines. As per one study, about 49% of the respondents cited that CIPP is by far the most preferred trenchless method. CIPP liners manufacturing has to be compliant under various standards governed by ASTM and has to follow the emission norms of regulatory bodies, such as OSHA regulation.
The global cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) market offers healthy growth opportunity and is likely to reach an estimated value of US$ 2,615.4 million in 2023. Aging potable and sewage water structure, increasing spending by municipalities and utilities on rehabilitation, increasing awareness about the benefits of trenchless techniques, and high performance of CIPP over competing technologies are the major growth drivers of the global CIPP market.

The market is segmented based on the pipe diameter type: less than 1 foot, 1-2.5 feet, 2.5-5 feet, and greater than 5 feet. Less than 1 foot is projected to remain the growth engine of the global CIPP market during the forecast period. Small diameter pipes require less funding and are easy to install as compared to large diameter pipes. This has resulted in a huge installed base of small diameter pipes. 8” diameter pipe is considered to be a standard and has been one of the largest used pipelines across the world.
Based on the resin type, polyester resin-based CIPP is expected to remain the largest segment of the market during the forecast period. Polyester resin impregnates liner materials well and can be cured even when ambient temperatures drop to near or below freezing. It is mostly used in gravity sewer rehabilitation, owing to high flexural modulus, low tensile elongation, and good chemical resistance. Further, its lower cost as compared to vinyl ester and epoxy resins elevate its demand.
Vinyl ester resin-based CIPP segment is likely to witness the highest growth over the next five years, owing to its caustic and high-temperature material resistance properties. Vinyl ester resin-based CIPP offers inherently better impact resistance than the polyester resin-based CIPP construction. It is also stronger than polyester resin-based CIPP and cheaper than epoxy resin-based CIPP. Vinyl ester resins offer better resistance to moisture absorption and are the preferred choice where corrosion of pipe is the biggest concern.
Epoxy resin does not have HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) or cause VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emissions and is considered to be one of the eco-friendliest choices for CIPP. Epoxy resinis mostly used for the rehabilitation of potable water pipelines as it’s the only resin that meets the NSF/ANSI 61 potable water requirements.
Based on the fabric type, polyester fabric-based CIPP is projected to remain the largest segment of the market during the forecast period. Polyester fabric exceeds the desired tensile strength and meets the ASTM D461 standard for feeling at a very competitive price compared to other fabrics. It is considered a superior fabric for optimum resin carriage coupled with high surface tension.
Glass fabric is likely to remain the second largest, but fastest-growing fabric type during the forecast period. Glass fabric is the preferred choice for CIPP where curing is done through UV. The main reason for using glass fabric liner with UV curing, instead of water or steam-cured felt liners, is that felt curing generates by-products that negatively affect the environment.
Based on the curing type, steam is projected to remain the most dominant curing method in the market during the forecast period. The overall curing time of the steam process is lower than that of the hot water curing time as the transfer of heat in the steam process is faster as compared to hot water. Set up of a steam cure system is also quicker than a hot water cure system and it does not require large-scale water on job site as required in case of hot water curing.
UV curing is likely to witness the highest growth over the next five years. UV liners do not need refrigeration; hence, they can be delivered directly to the job site in advance. They are 3 to 5 times stronger than conventional felt CIPP liners, contribute towards reducing emissions and are not temperature sensitive.
Based on regions, North America is expected to remain the largest CIPP market during the forecast period. The region has most of the pipelines installed post world war II which are at retirement age and need rehabilitation. The USA alone has about 0.8 million miles of sewer pipes and 0.5 million miles of private lateral sewers and majority of which are over 60 years. The average lifespan of sewer pipes in the USA is about 50 years. This has led to a large-scale demand for rehabilitation in the region where CIPP is the most preferred choice.
Asia-Pacific is likely to remain the fastest-growing market during the forecast period. Various emerging countries in the region, such as China, have currently been practicing other technologies for the rehabilitation of pipelines but they have now started implementing CIPP at a faster rate.
The key CIPP manufacturers are Insituform Technologies Inc., Layne Inliner LLC, iMPREG GmbH, Inland Pipe Rehabilitation, Reline Europe AG, Saerxtex multiCom GmbH, Ashimori Industry Co. Ltd., and Norditube Technologies SE.
