The Shift to Advanced UPS Batteries for Greater Reliability and Sustainability
The rise of advanced battery technologies, such as lithium-ion, nickel-zinc, and sodium-ion, is reshaping UPS systems in data centers, with lithium-ion leading due to its longer lifespan, lower maintenance, and energy efficiency. As sustainability becomes a core priority, operators are moving away from traditional VRLA batteries to meet reliability and carbon reduction goals. Modular UPS systems are gaining traction for their scalability and adaptability, offering greater operational resilience, while VRLA batteries still support high energy demands, modern batteries now provide enhanced safety features, such as live swap capabilities, ensuring uninterrupted power without compromising uptime. Additionally, double-conversion UPS systems continue to offer the highest level of power protection in mission-critical environments, reinforcing data centers’ commitment to reliability and sustainability.
Key Development:
· In August 2024, Natron Energy announced plans to establish the first-large scale sodium-ion battery factory in the US with an investment of $1.40 billion in North Carolina. This is said to produce 24 GWh of sodium-ion batteries annually at full capacity.
· In April 2025, Verne announced its plan to swap diesel generators with HVO fuel for backup power in its London data center facility in Farringdon. The company has partnered with Crown Oil, a fuels and lubricants distribution company which will replace diesel fuel.
Powering the Future: The Shift to Renewable Energy in Data Centers
The growing trend of procuring renewable energy to power data centers is rapidly gaining momentum across various regions and countries. From wind and solar to geothermal and hydropower, data centers are tapping into diverse renewable energy sources to reduce their carbon footprint and decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Many leading data center operators, such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, are proactively signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy providers to fuel their operations sustainably. The data centers accounting for 1-3% of global energy consumption, this shift is vital for achieving net-zero carbon emissions. Thus, by embracing renewable energy, these companies are making significant progress toward their ambitious sustainability goals while powering the digital world in an eco-friendly manner.
