In dry mix method, the dry compounds are placed in a hopper and then blown with the help of a nozzle. In wet mix shotcrete, previously prepared mixed concrete is pumped through a nozzle. Compressed air is introduced at the nozzle to drive the mixture on to the receiving surface. The wet mix procedure generally produces fewer recoils, wastes, and dust particles as compared to the dry mix process. The greatest advantage of the wet mix process is that all the components are mixed with the water and additives required, and greater amount of concrete can be placed in a smaller timespan than the dry process. Hence, wet mix is the preferred method for activities such as mining and tunneling, where large amount of concrete is required for stabilization. Structures constructed with wet mix process have superior quality and are more efficient compared to the dry process, which is the main driving factor for the shotcrete accelerator market. Alkali-free accelerators are largely used as the alkaline accelerators have a caustic nature posing various health risks, especially to the shotcrete nozzle operators.
