Less than 5% of UK Households have a Fire Escape Plan

Every household should have a fire escape or evacuation plan, just in case, however statistics show that less than 5% of UK households have a plan in place if the worst scenario happens. CAVIUS are urging UK households to ensure they implement a fire escape plan.

In the UK fire escape regulations dictate that a work place must have at least two exit routes to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency.

More than two exits are required, however, if the number of employees, size of the building, or arrangement of the workplace will not allow employees to evacuate safely. Exit routes must be located as far away as practical from each other in case one is blocked by fire or smoke.

Our schools are required to undertake risk assessments to identify the general fire precautions needed to safeguard the safety of occupants in case of fire, including their safe means of escape.

Yet statistics show that the likelihood of you having a fire at home is much higher than that of a fire in a workplace, so why are we not ensuring that we have the necessary fire precautions in place at home?

Your ability to get out of your home during a fire depends on advance warning from smoke and heat alarms and advance planning.

One of the first steps to ensuring you have a safe evacuation plan is to ensure you have smoke alarms fitted across your home. It is vital that you install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in separate areas and heat alarms in areas such as the kitchen where smoke alarms can’t be used.

Once you have installed all your smoke and heat alarms, get everyone in the home together and do a ‘walk through’. This is where you can pinpoint all possible escape routes and exits, if you have children you can also point out where all the smoke alarms are and how to escape safely, especially if it means climbing out of a window.

When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear, and doors and windows can be opened easily.

Once you have covered the basics in your home, choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbour's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.

Finally, make sure everyone has memorised the number for the emergency fire services and make sure they can identify your home from the road.
