Housebuilder’s plan just the ticket

An expanding South West housebuilder has been granted planning permission for a development in Cam, near Stroud in Gloucestershire, which will ease parking congestion around the local railway station.

As part of the proposal for 90 properties, Wainhomes will create a new 40 space car park on land it owns just off Box Road, about 100 metres from the Cam and Dursley Station, where parking has become an issue for local residents.

With dozens of rail passengers parking their vehicles along Box Road each working day, the highway is severely restricted, prompting people to raise safety concerns and Cam Parish Council to stage a special meeting.

At the gathering, Chair, Cllr. Christina Carter, said:  "We share the concerns of local residents about this increasingly urgent problem and we will continue to do all we can to find a solution. We are lobbying all of the agencies involved for urgent improvements to the access road and facilities at Cam station.”

The Wainhomes application was approved by Stroud District Council’s Planning Committee.

Managing Director, Carl Haley, said:  “It is clear that the significant development which has taken place in the area has led to a large increase in use of the station.  Our proposal would help address this by providing additional parking space close by.  In addition, we will also create electric vehicle charging points.

“Whilst building much needed homes is our core business, our policy is to work with local planning authorities and communities to address issues which can improve people’s lives.  This initiative is an example of how we can do this.”

Work could start on the 9 acre site within a few weeks.  To be known as Lister Gardens, it would offer 63 homes for sale, 13 for shared ownership and 14 for affordable rent.  A registered housing provider for the project will be announced soon.

Other projects for which Wainhomes Severn Valley – based on the Almondsbury Business Park in Bristol – has planning permission include: Harry Stoke, north east of Bristol – 327 homes; Tadpole Garden Village, north of Swindon - 146 homes; Charlton Hayes, north of Bristol - 98 homes; South Cerney, in the Cotswolds - 92 homes; Patterdown, Chippenham - 72 homes; East Huntspill, north of Bridgwater – 40 homes and Royal Wootton Bassett - 38 homes.

Others awaiting detailed planning approval are at Twigworth and Woolavington, which would deliver a further 249 properties.

In addition to the Severn Valley, Wainhomes operates in the North West and South West of England.  It also has a specialist division – HIMOR – focusing on complicated brown field sites and property investments that have long term redevelopment potential.

In the year ending June 2019, the company successfully completed nearly 1,000 new home sales - a record year.
